AGARTALA: In a shocking incident of violence in the outskirts of Agartala, a group of individuals stripped a woman and thrashed her and her teenage son for their alleged involvement in a case of theft. The local police, as of Tuesday, are yet to apprehend any suspects in connection with the incident.
According to reports in the local press, the distressing incident unfolded in the wake of a reported theft on Sunday.
Three teenagers were accused of stealing money from a shop in Shanmura, situated on the outskirts of Agartala, with the purported intention of purchasing drugs. Following their alleged crime, the trio was apprehended by a group of youths. Subsequently, two of the teenagers were released, while one minor was detained by the vigilante group.
Disturbingly, the situation escalated further on Monday, when a group of locals, led by a gram panchayat member, convened an impromptu “kangaroo court”. In this makeshift judicial setting, the minor and his mother were summoned. Here, the woman and her son faced a horrifying ordeal—reports suggest that they were stripped and mercilessly assaulted by the mob. The severity of the beating left both victims with multiple injuries, prompting their admission to the Agartala Government Medical College and Hospital for medical treatment.
Law enforcement officials swiftly intervened, rescuing the battered mother and son. The police recorded the victims’ statements and promptly launched an investigation to apprehend those responsible for the heinous crime. However, up until now, no arrests have been made.
The incident has attracted widespread condemnation, even catching the attention of Chief Minister Manik Saha. Local press reports suggest that Chief Minister Saha has acknowledged the seriousness of the matter and issued directives to the police to ensure that every individual involved in the crime is held accountable.
