Agartala: A woman was allegedly assaulted and publicly humiliated by villagers in Tripura’s Dhalai district over accusations of an extramarital relationship, prompting police action and condemnation from the Tripura Commission for Women.
The incident took place on Saturday morning at Harerkhola village under Kamalpur police station limits.
According to police, the woman, a mother of two, was forcibly dragged out of her house by a group of villagers, beaten, and made to wear a garland of shoes. She was later found lying injured on the road.
On receiving information, a police team rushed to the spot and rescued her. She was taken to the district hospital at Ambassa, where doctors conducted a CT scan.
Police said her condition is stable and she is out of danger.
A case has been registered at Kamalpur police station, and an investigation is underway.

One person has been arrested so far in connection with the assault, police confirmed.
Tripura Commission for Women chairperson Jharna Debbarma strongly condemned the incident, calling it an act of unlawful violence and humiliation.
She said no individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands and urged the police to proceed strictly in accordance with the law against all those involved.
Debbarma said the commission would send a team to Kamalpur to meet the victim and assured that the TCW would take necessary steps to ensure justice in the case.
