Agartala: Two suspected Bangladeshi nationals were shot dead and another injured after Border Security Force (BSF) personnel opened fire to thwart a smuggling attempt along the India-Bangladesh border in South Tripura’s Amzadnagar area early Friday, officials confirmed on Saturday.

The incident occurred when BSF jawans spotted a group of smugglers trying to cross the international border under the cover of darkness.

According to a senior BSF official, the smugglers turned violent when challenged, prompting the security personnel to fire in self-defence.

“Three individuals sustained bullet injuries. One died on the spot, while two others were carried back into Bangladeshi territory by their associates,” the officer said.

The injured were taken to the Parshuram Upazila Health Centre in Bangladesh, where one later succumbed to injuries. The third is currently undergoing treatment.

Following the incident, BSF recovered a consignment of medicines valued at approximately Rs. 15 lakh from the area.

The body of the smuggler who died at the site was handed over to Bangladeshi authorities in the presence of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officials.

A commandant-level flag meeting was also held between BSF and BGB to address the situation.

“BGB raised concerns over the firing, but we reiterated that BSF acted in self-defence and that smuggling activities along the border will be dealt with firmly,” the BSF officer said.

Meanwhile, Tripura Police confirmed the arrest of two Indian nationals in connection with the smuggling attempt.

“They are currently in custody and are being interrogated,” said Assistant Inspector General (Law and Order) Ranadhir Debbarma.
