Agartala: The Unakoti district administration in Tripura has launched a campaign to make the region plastic-free, installing more than 50,000 bins across the district to encourage proper disposal of bottles and other waste, officials said on Friday.
The initiative covers all 92 gram panchayats, autonomous district council (ADC) villages, development blocks and municipal councils, as well as public spaces, government offices, educational institutions and major establishments, they said.
Describing it as a community-driven movement, Unakoti Zilla Parishad president Amalendu Das said the campaign seeks active participation from government departments, self-help groups (SHGs) and households.
Alongside the outreach effort, the administration has been strengthening its waste management infrastructure, officials said. Segregation centres are being made operational in every gram panchayat to enable decentralised waste handling at the local level.
District Magistrate Tamal Majumder said plastic waste management units are being set up across all rural development blocks. “One such unit at Kumarghat is already operational, while another at Pechartal was inaugurated on Thursday,” he said.

Majumder added that through local infrastructure development, workforce engagement, institutional participation and community involvement, Unakoti district aims to establish a robust and sustainable waste management model.
