Tripura’s solar power generation capacity is expected to cross the 10 MW mark by March 2026, driven by the large-scale implementation of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, a senior government official said on Saturday.
Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) Managing Director Biswajit Basu said the state has already achieved a significant milestone, with rooftop solar installations generating more than 6 MW of power.
He described the progress as an important step in Tripura’s renewable energy transition, noting that solar power is increasingly emerging as a symbol of development and self-reliance.
Speaking to the media, Basu expressed confidence that the state would comfortably exceed the 10 MW target within the next year, given the strong public response to the scheme.
He said the PM Surya Ghar initiative has witnessed unprecedented participation across Tripura, with 17,131 electricity consumers registering under the programme so far.
According to him, solar panels have already been installed on the rooftops of 1,762 households, effectively turning homes into small power-generating units.
These installations are collectively producing around 6 MW of electricity by harnessing solar energy.
Basu said the scheme has not only ensured reliable power supply but has also opened up income opportunities for consumers.
Under the programme, households are meeting their own electricity needs and earning by selling surplus power back to the state utility.
He said 187 consumers have so far earned a total of Rs 53,514 through the sale of excess solar power, with the amount credited directly to their bank accounts.
He added that the initiative has transformed solar energy from being merely an environmentally friendly option into a practical source of financial support for households, while also significantly reducing electricity bills.

With solar panels increasingly visible on rooftops in both rural and urban areas, Basu said the initiative reflects a broader shift towards sustainable development, energy self-sufficiency and environmental responsibility.
He said the PM Surya Ghar scheme has shown that development goes beyond physical infrastructure and plays a role in shaping aspirations for a greener and more sustainable future.
The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, launched by the Union government in February 2024, is the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar initiative.
It aims to provide rooftop solar connections to one crore households by March 2027, with an outlay of Rs 75,021 crore, and is expected to play a key role in transforming India’s residential energy landscape.
