Agartala: Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress (TPYC) leader Shahjan Islam, who had been absconding for the past six months in connection with two FIRs, was arrested by the police on Monday, an official said.
The cases stem from a complaint filed by former BJP state committee treasurer Nagadhiraj Dutta, who accused Islam of making derogatory remarks against Chief Minister Manik Saha during a live Facebook broadcast and of being involved in an alleged attack on BJP workers on June 8, 2025.
Subsequently, BJP Minority Morcha leader Billal Miah also lodged a separate FIR against the Youth Congress leader for allegedly making offensive comments against him.
Since these complaints were lodged, Shahjan had been missing until his recent arrest.
Confirming the arrest, Sadar sub-divisional police officer D P Roy said that acting on intelligence inputs, a police team conducted a special raid at Joypur on the outskirts of the city and apprehended Islam.
He said two FIRs had been registered against Islam under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including attempt to murder. Islam will be produced before a local court, where police will seek his remand for further investigation.
Earlier, Islam’s father, Khairul Islam, and his brother Nazrul Islam were arrested in connection with the same cases and were later released on bail.
