AGARTALA: At least 12 houses and a few vehicles were set on fire by unidentified persons in the Ranirbazar area of West Tripura following the desecration of an idol of Goddess Kali at a local temple, police said on Monday.
This incident triggered communal tensions between two communities in Durganagar village on Sunday.
In response to the incident, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, the MLA of the area, promptly visited the site, spoke with the residents and affected individuals, and helped bring the situation under control.
On Monday, West District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS Act in the Jirania subdivision under which Ranirbazar falls.
Kumar said that as per the inputs received from the Superintendent of Police, West Tripura, there is a risk of public disorder due to the violent actions of a group of individuals within the Jirania Sub Division.
