AGARTALA: Tripura has witnessed a significant increase in the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) of female students pursuing higher education within the state.
Addressing the platinum jubilee celebration of Ramkrishna Mahavidyalaya in Unakoti district, Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha said, “This academic year (2024-25), 37,450 girl students enrolled in general degree colleges, compared to 35,800 boy students. In the previous academic year (2023-24), more girl students (35,650) enrolled in degree colleges than their male counterparts (35,800).”
The Chief Minister attributed the surge in the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) of female students in the state to the government’s initiative, implemented in 2022, to provide free education for girls up to the college level.
Saha said the government is committed to empowering women and has actively supported the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign.
“We have implemented several initiatives, including a 33% reservation for women in government jobs, the construction of ‘pink toilets’ for women’s convenience, and a 50% reservation for women in government stalls. These measures reflect our dedication to promoting women’s welfare and equality,” the chief minister said.
He attributed the successful implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) in the state’s colleges for the increase in the GER of girl students.
He also highlighted the introduction of the ‘Lakshya’ scheme to assist students in preparing for competitive examinations such as the UPSC.
