Agartala: The Tripura government is prioritizing the development of the Kamalpur to Santirbazar road into a national highway at the earliest.
This decision underscores the state’s growing focus on connectivity and economic development.
Currently, Tripura boasts six national highways covering a total span of 923.31 km.
The Centre has agreed ‘in principle’ to develop four more national highways in Tripura, the official said.
The Kamalpur-Santirbazar road has immense importance as it connects key regions of the state. This route is crucial for travel between northern and southern Tripura, facilitating movement between districts vital for trade, agriculture, and daily commutes.
The Kamalpur-Santirbazar route has the potential to serve as a critical corridor for the movement of goods and passengers. Upgrading the road to a national highway will improve transport infrastructure and stimulate economic activity in the region.
“Although four highways are supposed to be developed as national highway in principle by the Centre, the state is giving priority to the 148 km Kamalpur to Santirbazar road to get NH sanction from the Centre,” P Jamatia, chief engineer of national highways, told a news agency.
The Rs 2,000 crore sambitious project is considered pivotal for improving the socio-economic landscape of the tribal communities in Dhalai, Gomati, and South Tripura districts.
Upgrading the Kamalpur-Santirbazar road requires careful planning and coordination between state and central agencies. Engineers and planners will assess the terrain, traffic patterns, and environmental impact before construction.
