Agartala: In a bid to curb rising road accidents, Tripura police has launched a statewide enforcement campaign targeting juveniles driving motorised vehicles, calling the practice a significant threat to public safety.
The drive is being conducted under Section 199A of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, which clearly prohibits anyone below 18 years from driving a motorised vehicle and holds adults accountable for allowing such violations.
According to the amended provisions of the Act, no individual below 18 years of age is permitted to drive a motorised vehicle under any circumstances.
The accountability for these violations rests with the guardians and vehicle owners who permit minors to drive.
Under the law, penalties for underage driving include a fine of Rs 25,000 to be imposed on the vehicle owner or guardian, imprisonment of up to three years for the responsible adult, and cancellation of the vehicle’s registration for one year.
In addition, juveniles caught driving will also be disqualified from obtaining a driving licence until the age of 25.
Tripura Police has urged parents and guardians to strictly prevent minors from driving any motor vehicle, warning that such negligence could lead to serious legal consequences and pose a threat to public safety.
