Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Friday said the state government is planning to establish a health university to oversee and run its medical institutions.
At present, Tripura has three medical colleges, one dental sciences college, three nursing colleges and one paramedical college.
Saha said the three medical colleges together offer 350 MBBS seats, adding that the state has applied to the Centre for an increase in intake at the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC). “We hope the Centre will allow an additional 100 MBBS seats at AGMC,” he said.
The chief minister noted that all medical colleges in the state are currently affiliated with Tripura University, and the proposed health university would streamline the administration and academic functioning of medical and allied institutions.
Highlighting Tripura’s growing education sector, Saha said several premier institutions, including the National Forensic Science University (NFSU), National Law University (NLU), Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) and National Institute of Technology (NIT), are already functioning in the state. “The day is not far when Tripura will emerge as an educational hub in the Northeast,” he added.
Saha also spoke about the second edition of the ‘Prabashi Tripurabashi Summit’, which saw the participation of around 70 potential investors and entrepreneurs. He said many people from Tripura who are well settled abroad attended the summit at their own expense and expressed keen interest in investing in the state.

“The participants were encouraged by the initiatives taken by the state government and showed willingness to invest in Tripura,” the chief minister said.
