Agartala: Leader of the Opposition in the Tripura Assembly, Jitendra Chaudhury, on Sunday demanded that a government job be provided to a family member of Anjel Chakma, a Tripura youth who was murdered in Dehradun in December.
Chaudhury visited the victim’s residence and criticised the Uttarakhand Police for what he described as lapses in the handling of the case. He said the police had initially registered the case under a relatively less stringent section despite Anjel having sustained grievous stab injuries.
“The manner in which the Uttarakhand Police handled Anjel Chakma’s murder is a serious matter. Despite clear evidence that he was brutally stabbed, the case was initially filed under a less severe section,” Chaudhury told reporters.
Anjel Chakma, a resident of Machmara village in Tripura’s Unakoti district, was allegedly attacked on December 9 in Dehradun after he objected to racial slurs. He later succumbed to his injuries on December 26.
Chaudhury also referred to claims made by Anjel’s father, Tarun Prasad Chakma, that his son might have survived had he received proper medical treatment in time.
Urging the Tripura government to intervene, Chaudhury said it should request Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to provide a government job to one of Anjel’s family members.
“Financial compensation cannot compensate for the loss of Anjel Chakma, who was pursuing an MBA in Dehradun. I appeal to the Tripura government to take up the matter with the Uttarakhand Chief Minister to ensure a government job for a member of the bereaved family, especially since his father, a serving BSF jawan, is due to retire next year,” he said.
