Kailashahar (Tripura): The Tripura government has introduced a location-based e-attendance system for teachers in government schools across the state.
This initiative, which began in June, requires approximately 25,000 teachers in 4,912 schools to share their live locations upon arriving at their respective schools.
According to Unakoti District’s Education Officer, Prasant Killikdar, the system builds upon the e-attendance feature already in use.
The new functionality mandates teachers to click the “share location” option on a digital device only after physically entering the school premises.
This ensures accuracy and prevents misuse.
The e-attendance data, combined with the teachers’ locations, is uploaded by the school headmaster or headmistress to the school management system, a digital platform accessible to officials in real time.
“This allows key stakeholders, including the chief minister, secretary, and director of education, to monitor attendance across the state instantly,” Killikdar explained.
While the system effectively tracks teacher attendance, it does not yet record departure times.
Attendance for students continues to be recorded and uploaded by class teachers during school hours.
To ensure compliance and further improve the quality of education, the education department has constituted inter-district committees that conduct surprise inspections at schools.
These committees submit their findings to district education offices, which forward them to the Director of Education for necessary action.

The introduction of e-attendance with location sharing has already shown positive results. Vidyajyoti (CBSE) schools in Unakoti district and across Tripura have reported better academic performance this year compared to 2024, attributed in part to the increased oversight and accountability measures.
Officials view the initiative as a significant step toward ensuring the presence and engagement of teachers, ultimately aiming to boost the quality of education in government schools.
