Agartala: The Tripura Cabinet has cleared a proposal to roll out the Centre’s ‘Nari Adalat’ scheme on a pilot basis in 10 gram panchayats across the state, Transport and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said on Friday.
The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Manik Saha on Thursday.
The ‘Nari Adalat’ initiative, introduced by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, will function as a panchayat-level arbitration forum to address cases of atrocities against women. The platform is designed to resolve disputes through community-based mechanisms and, when required, recommend police intervention.
Each Nari Adalat will comprise a committee of up to nine respected members of the community. The pilot project will cover selected gram panchayats in all eight districts of Tripura, the minister said.
The identified panchayats include Fulbari in North Tripura, Srirampur in Unakoti, West Sonatala in Khowai, Lembucherra in West Tripura, Khedabari in Sepahijala, Tepania in Gomati, Vivekananda Palli in South Tripura, and Singanala, Halahali and North Halahali in Dhalai district.
Chief Minister Saha said the scheme aims to provide a supportive platform for women who may hesitate to approach police or other law enforcement authorities directly.
In another decision, the Cabinet approved guidelines to provide coaching support to graduates domiciled in Tripura for national-level competitive examinations conducted by UPSC, SSC, RRB and IBPS.
Coaching centres will be set up at Bir Chandra State Central Library in Agartala, Netaji Subhash Mahavidyalaya in Udaipur and Government Degree College in Ambassa.
Each centre will admit 100 aspirants, selected on merit through a screening test conducted by the Higher Education Department. Budgetary provisions for the initiative were made in the previous state budget, the minister said.
Additionally, the Cabinet approved an increase in the daily stipend for Scheduled Caste hostel boarders from Rs 80 to Rs 100. The move is expected to benefit 712 students residing in 33 boys’ hostels, 20 girls’ hostels and one NGO-run hostel across the state.
