Agartala: The Tripura government on Thursday suspended five jail officials after six inmates, including a life convict, escaped from the Dharmanagar Sub-Jail in North Tripura district.

While two of the fugitives have since been re-arrested, a large-scale manhunt continues for the remaining four.

The suspension order, issued by the Inspector General of Prisons, names jailor Dhananjoy Bhattacharya along with warders Pallab Kanti Bhowmik, Prashikhan Jamatia, Mohammad Gedu Mia and Notan Lodh.

Disciplinary action has been initiated against them for negligence.

The jailbreak occurred early Wednesday when the six prisoners allegedly attacked a guard with sharp weapons before fleeing.

The injured jail staffer, Bedu Miah, is undergoing treatment at Dharmanagar District Hospital and is reported to be stable.

Security forces quickly launched a manhunt, and two escapees—identified as Abdul Pata and Narayan Chandra Dutta—were nabbed within 24 hours in the Dharmanagar police station limits.

Dutta is a Bangladeshi national facing charges under the Passport Act, while Pata, hailing from Assam’s Karimganj (now Sribhumi) district, is accused in narcotics-related cases.

The other four fugitives have been identified as Rahim Ali, Rosan Ali, Nazim Uddin, and Sunil Debbarma—the latter serving a life term for murder.

Authorities have sealed exit points along Assam and Mizoram borders and alerted the Border Security Force (BSF) to prevent any escape into Bangladesh.

District SP Avinash Kumar Rai is supervising the search operation, which entered its second day on Thursday.

Officials said all police stations and security posts in North Tripura and adjoining districts are on high alert as the pursuit for the remaining fugitives intensifies.
