Tripura Governor Indrasena Nallu Reddy on Tuesday paid homage to soldiers who laid down their lives in the 1971 India-Pakistan War, marking Vijay Diwas at the Albert Ekka War Memorial in West Tripura district.
Laying floral tributes at the memorial, the Governor remembered the sacrifices of the armed forces that led to India’s victory and the creation of Bangladesh.
He recalled that Tripura had played a significant role during the war, as large numbers of people from erstwhile East Pakistan had taken refuge in the State.
Reddy said the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi stood firmly with the people of Bangladesh in their struggle against oppression.
“I offer my sincere gratitude to those who fought the war and achieved victory. Their sacrifice will be etched in golden letters in military history,” the Governor told reporters.
Responding to questions on the current situation in neighbouring Bangladesh, Reddy said it was not the occasion for political commentary, adding that developments there were temporary and that maintaining good relations was in the interest of neighbouring countries.
Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar and senior Army officers were present at the commemoration ceremony.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Manik Saha also extended greetings to the people of the State on Vijay Diwas.
In a Facebook post, he paid tribute to the brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice for the decisive victory in the 1971 war and the emergence of Bangladesh as a sovereign nation.
