Agartala: The Tripura government has issued show-cause notices to 34 Scheduled Tribe (ST) students for allegedly submitting fraudulent income certificates to secure post-matric scholarships, a senior official confirmed on Wednesday.
According to Tribal Welfare Department Director Subhasish Das, a total of 35,665 ST students applied for post-matric scholarships through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) during the 2023-24 academic session.
Of these, 34,436 students were granted scholarships amounting to Rs. 68.13 crore.
The scholarship scheme covers full college fees for eligible students pursuing various courses.
However, an administrative inquiry revealed that 34 students had submitted falsified income certificates while applying for the scholarship through NSP, the official notice issued by Das stated.

“The submission of fake income certificates to obtain scholarship grants amounts to misappropriation of public funds, document forgery, and deception of the scholarship sanctioning authority—offenses that constitute criminal acts,” the notice further emphasised.
The accused students have been directed to respond to the show-cause notice explaining why an FIR should not be filed against them for their actions.
They must submit their replies to Das by April 16.
