AGARTALA: The death toll from extensive flooding in Tripura has risen to 10 and over 34,000 people are taking shelter in 331 relief camps in 8 districts of the state.
Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has sought assistance from the Centre, including the deployment of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel, to manage the worsening flood situation in the state.
The chief minister also spoke to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and apprised him of the prevailing flood situation in the state.
Taking to micro-blogging site X, Union Home Minister Amit Shah wrote, “Spoke with CM Tripura @DrManikSaha2 Ji, and took stock of the flood situation in the state. The Centre is rushing teams of NDRF, apart from boats and helicopters, to the state to assist the local government in relief and rescue operations. Assured of all possible assistance from the Centre as and when required. The Modi government firmly stands with our sisters and brothers in Tripura during this hour of crisis.”
Saha confirmed that eleven NDRF teams from neighbouring Assam and Arunachal Pradesh are en route Tripura. He also said that helicopters would be deployed to airlift stranded residents from flood-affected areas.
“Relief materials and disaster management equipment have landed at Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya Bahadur Airport, Agartala and are being swiftly dispatched to flood-affected areas,” CM Saha said.
The chief minister expressed gratitude to PM Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for extending unwavering support to the people of Tripura in this challenging time.
The state has been hit by record rainfall over the past two days, with South Tripura receiving more than 375 mm of rain.
In some areas, rainfall was measured as high as 350 mm, and Agartala alone recorded 180 mm of rain on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, with two more fatalities from the Sepahijala district, the death toll from the floods rose to 10 on Wednesday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier issued an orange alert for three northeastern states including Tripura. It warned that Tripura, Nagaland and Mizoram are likely to experience isolated heavy rainfall throughout the week due to the development of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.
In the wake of the ongoing flood situation, the Chief Minister has appealed to the people of the state to remain vigilant and follow the authorities’ instructions as the state braces for more challenging days ahead.
