Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha revealed in the state assembly on Wednesday that the state is facing a shortage of 4,187 teachers in elementary education.
In response to a query by CPI(M) MLA Nayan Sarkar, Saha, who also holds the Education portfolio, explained that Tripura requires 10,391 Under Graduate Teachers (UGTs) and 8,546 Graduate Teachers (GTs) based on updated state norms.
Currently, the state has 8,985 UGTs and 5,765 GTs serving in schools under the Elementary Education Department.
This results in a shortfall of 1,406 UGTs and 2,781 GTs, totaling 4,187 teachers.
In an answer to another question by CPI(M) MLA Shyamal Chakraborty, the chief minister informed the assembly that the government has successfully appointed 4,656 GTs and UGTs over the last five years through the Teachers’ Recruitment Board of Tripura (TRBT).

Addressing concerns about the quality of education, he emphasised that the government has launched several initiatives to improve standards.
One such initiative is NIPUN, a state mission aimed at promoting foundational literacy and numeracy.
To date, 10,182 primary education teachers have received training under this programme.
Furthermore, 200 block and cluster resource persons have been appointed as master trainers for NIPUN to further enhance the educational framework.
