Unakoti: A court in Tripura’s Unakoti district on Thursday sentenced a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for abducting and raping a girl three years ago.
Additional District and Sessions Court judge Amarendra Kumar Singh also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict, with an additional two months in prison if the amount is not paid, Public Prosecutor Sunirmal Deb said.
The minor, a resident of Srinathpur in the Irani police station jurisdiction, went missing on October 25, 2022. Despite an extensive search by her family, she could not be traced. They later discovered that the girl had been abducted and taken to Golakpur tea garden, where she was raped.
The survivor’s father lodged a complaint at the Irani police station, leading to the arrest of the accused and the subsequent filing of the charge sheet.
During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence, including witness statements, forensic reports, and medical examinations that substantiated the abduction and assault charges. The court, after hearing arguments from both sides, pronounced the stringent sentence to reflect the severity of the crime and deter similar offences.
