Agartala: The Congress party in Tripura has announced plans to organize a long march to the international border in Unakoti district to press demand for repair of an existing embankment or build a new one to save Kailashahar town.

This was informed by party MLA Birajit Sinha on Wednesday.

During the winter session of the assembly, Congress MLA Birajit Sinha drew the attention of Chief Minister Manik Saha about Bangladesh building an embankment on their side near Tripura’s Rangauti area.

Sinha said the people of Kailashahar are concerned about the state government’s dilly-dally attitude over Bangladesh’s move to construct a high-rise embankment.

If this is done, several areas of Kailashahar town will submerge during monsoon, he said.

He vowed that the Unakoti district Congress committee would act, after witnessing the construction of an elevated embankment by the neighboring nation.

He said that to save Kailashahar town from impending flood, they would organize a “border abhijan” (long march to the border) on January 25, demanding the immediate repair or construction of the embankment in Kailashahar.

He added that thousands of people were expected to join the movement.

Sinha said that the people were demanding immediate action from both the state and central governments to repair or reconstruct the 40-year-old embankment to prevent the town from facing disaster.

The Tripura Government has expressed concern over the Bangladesh Government’s reported construction of an embankment on River Manu close to the Indo-Bangla international border near Devipur under Tripura’s Unakoti district.

Notably, a team led by Dilip Kumar Chakma, District Magistrate, Unakoti, recently inspected the site from the zero point and said the Kailasahar township could face devastating floods owing to the embankment right across the border.
