Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Monday said he would take up the issue of expansion and upgradation of the Churaibari check post in North Tripura with his Assam counterpart to facilitate smoother vehicular movement and strengthen border checks.
Speaking to the media after a two-day visit to North Tripura, Saha said he had received several complaints regarding the functioning of the Churaibari check post, prompting him to conduct a physical inspection. “I found the grievances to be genuine,” he said.
The chief minister said the administration has been directed to address the problems immediately. “The government does not tolerate irregularities. Strict action has been ordered, and further steps will be taken if lapses continue,” he said.
Saha noted that inadequate space on the Assam side of the border often leads to traffic congestion at the check post. “I will discuss the expansion and development of the facility with the Assam chief minister and also raise the issue during the upcoming plenary session,” he added.
Raising environmental concerns, Saha said several stone-crushing units located along the highway were operating in violation of prescribed norms. As per regulations, such units must be situated at least 100 metres away from national highways. “These units were established during the Left Front regime and have not been properly monitored,” he said.
He announced that a meeting would be convened to discuss the regulation and possible relocation of the units. The chief minister also flagged the issue of overloaded trucks transporting stone materials and called for corrective measures.

During his visit, Saha also inspected the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) depot in Dharmanagar, where he interacted with drivers and officials. He urged drivers not to pay illegal charges and to report any such incidents directly to his office. “Such practices will not be tolerated,” he said.
