Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has proposed a Rs. 969-crore project plan to the central government aimed at achieving self-sufficiency in milk, eggs, fish, and meat production in the northeastern state.
The proposal was presented during a virtual meeting of the DoNER Ministry’s High-Level Task Force, attended by Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and chief ministers of northeastern states.
Highlighting a milk production shortfall of 0.35 lakh metric tonnes in the 2023-24 fiscal, Saha emphasised Tripura’s efforts to bridge the gap using advanced artificial insemination techniques.
He suggested setting up eight district-level dairy farms, each housing 200 cows, at a cost of Rs. 80 crore, along with a Rs. 7-crore project to enhance the Gomati Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd with bulk milk cooling stations and a heifer introduction programme.
For the egg sector, Tripura leads the northeastern region with a per capita availability of 87 eggs per year, significantly higher than the regional average of 25.
To expand production, the chief minister proposed Rs. 15 crore for farmer-run mini hatcheries and Rs. 6 crore for modernizing existing poultry and duck farms.
In the meat sector, Saha suggested establishing a Rs. 17-crore facility for meat production, processing, and packaging.
Additionally, he proposed a Rs. 30-crore automated feed mixing plant to address feed shortages for livestock, poultry, and fish farming.
These initiatives aim to bolster Tripura’s agricultural and livestock infrastructure, advancing its goal of becoming self-sufficient in essential food production.
