AGARTALA: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced on Thursday that his government will take steps to address the significant gap in the teacher-student ratio in the state, ensuring that quality education is provided to students across schools.
Speaking at an event in Gomati district, the chief minister emphasised the government’s commitment to properly implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in schools.
“We are actively reviewing the progress of implementing the National Education Policy to equip our students better. There has been a significant gap between the number of teachers and students in Tripura, with many schools lacking headmasters. I have already discussed this issue with the secretaries of the education and finance departments to address the shortage,” Saha explained.
Saha, who also holds the Education portfolio, reiterated the government’s focus on delivering quality education to all students.
“Previously, we followed the syllabi of the West Bengal Board and Calcutta University, which required students to study extensively to compete in national and state exams. That issue has now been resolved. We have introduced the NCERT syllabus, which gives students in Tripura an advantage when competing in national-level exams,” he said.

The chief minister also spoke about the progress in the education sector within the state.
“Currently, Tripura boasts six private universities, in addition to the state-run MBB University and Tripura University. Students from other states are now choosing to study here in the northeast,” he noted.
Tripura University is centrally run.
Saha also highlighted the state’s efforts to encourage female education, particularly the distribution of bicycles to female students in Class IX.
“To motivate young girls to continue their education, the education department distributed 1.30 lakh bicycles free of cost to female students in Class IX last year. A bicycle is invaluable for these students, as it makes commuting to school much easier,” he added.
