Agartala: In a bid to enhance road safety and emergency response, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Wednesday launched the Vehicle Location and Tracking System (VLTS), aimed at real-time monitoring of public transport and improving response to distress situations across the state.
The system, designed to be installed in public vehicles such as buses and taxis, will enable real-time tracking from a centralised control room set up at the state transport department.
One of the key features of VLTS is a panic button, which allows passengers—especially women—to alert authorities in case of emergencies.
At the launch event held in Agartala, the chief minister also flagged off 16 new ambulances equipped with basic life support (BLS) systems.
These have been handed over to the Police and Fire & Emergency Services Department to provide safer and faster transport for road accident victims.
“These ambulances mark a major improvement over the current practice, where victims are transported in open-hood vehicles,” said Dr. Saha.
“This initiative will ensure better care and quicker response in times of crisis.”
Transport Minister Sushanta Chawdhury and Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar were also present at the event.
Highlighting other steps taken by the state to support accident victims, Chawdhury noted that the financial reward for Good Samaritans—individuals who assist accident victims—has been increased.

“Previously, a reward of Rs. 5,000 was offered to those helping accident victims. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has now enhanced this amount to Rs. 25,000,” the minister said.
Officials believe that the new tracking system, combined with the deployment of modern ambulances and enhanced incentives for public assistance, will significantly improve road safety and emergency response outcomes in Tripura.
