Agartala: The death toll in the brick kiln chimney collapse in Tripura’s Dhalai district rose to five on Thursday after one of the injured workers succumbed to his injuries at G.B. Hospital, officials said.
Police have arrested the brick kiln owner, Sourav Pal, and the manager, Amit Deb, in connection with the incident.
Four workers were killed on the spot and four others were injured when the chimney of the brick kiln collapsed on Wednesday. One of the injured later died during treatment, taking the toll to five.
Chief Minister Manik Saha expressed deep grief over the loss of lives and directed officials to ensure proper medical care for the injured workers.
In a Facebook post, the Chief Minister announced that the Dhalai district administration has sanctioned Rs 25.16 lakh as ex gratia assistance for families affected by the tragedy. This includes Rs 4 lakh each for the families of the deceased, along with financial assistance for critically and less critically injured workers from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).
“We stand firmly with the bereaved families and the injured, ensuring timely relief and assistance during this difficult period,” Saha said.

An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the collapse. Local authorities said the probe would examine whether mandatory safety norms were followed and assess the structural condition of the chimney at the brick kiln.
