Agartala: In a significant security operation ahead of India’s Republic Day celebrations, Tripura Police arrested a Bangladeshi national with weapons and both Indian and Bangladeshi currencies.
Acting on specific intelligence, a police team raided a house in the Milanchakra Adarshapalli area late Tuesday night.
The house, reportedly used as a hideout by the accused, belonged to a local resident.
The arrested individual, identified as Samajpriya Chakma, a resident of Khagrachari district in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh, had been staying in the rented house for approximately five months.
During the raid, police recovered a loaded 9 mm pistol, several cartridges, 25,000 Bangladeshi Taka, Rs 2.21 lakh in Indian currency, and two smartphones from his possession.
Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Deba Prasad Roy confirmed the identity of Chakma through preliminary interrogation and documents seized from him.
An FIR has been filed under the Arms Act and several other legal provisions. Further investigation is ongoing to uncover additional details about his activities.
This incident underscores the persistent issues of infiltration and arms smuggling along the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura.
A Border Security Force (BSF) spokesperson stated that following unrest in Bangladesh last year, the BSF has stepped up its operations along the 856 km border in Tripura to combat infiltration, trans-border crimes, and smuggling.

With Republic Day approaching, security measures have been further strengthened to prevent cross-border criminal activities.
Parts of Tripura’s border with Bangladesh remain unfenced due to local disputes over land and demarcation.
In the past year, the BSF has apprehended 55 Rohingyas, 620 Bangladeshi nationals, and 260 Indian nationals, including human traffickers, in various operations.
