Agartala: The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) in Tripura has developed a comprehensive city development plan titled “Greater Agartala”, designed to meet the city’s needs for the next 20 years.
The Corporation on Friday (July 11) announced it would develop ‘Greater Agartala’, comprising 51 wards of the civic body and 49 gram panchayats.
Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder said the master plan for extending the city was almost ready. He added that the concept of ‘Greater Agartala’ was being formulated keeping in mind the requirements of the city for the next 20 years.
Mayor Majumder stated that the initial draft of the master plan has been completed and is currently under discussion within the AMC council. Once it receives the required departmental clearances, formal policy drafting will begin.
He said, “There was no master plan for Agartala city in the past. This has resulted in unplanned growth. The development of Agartala’s first master plan commenced in 2018, following the formation of the BJP-led state government, as no such plan existed previously.”
“This will help with finalising routes for metro services, overbridge sites, roads, or suitable sites for industrial areas in and around the city in the future. All these aspects will be marked in the master plan,” Majumder said.
The plan proposes the inclusion of 49 adjoining Gram Panchayats into the city’s jurisdiction, expanding the current 51 municipal wards. These areas will be integrated based on population growth, infrastructure feasibility, and development needs.
The framework has been developed using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, making it Agartala’s first digitally mapped master plan.
In addition to GIS mapping, the Urban Development Department is preparing a 3D model of the city to support spatial planning. The model is expected to assist in land-use decisions and infrastructure implementation.
As part of its broader objectives, AMC is also preparing new regulations to manage the city’s changing housing patterns, particularly the rise in high-rise apartments. These regulations will address zoning, safety, and land ownership to align with future development goals.

The last major expansion of the Agartala municipal area was carried out during the tenure of former chief minister Manik Sarkar in 2004, when the civic limits increased from 16.012 sq km to 62.02 sq km.
