Agartala: Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Asish Kumar Saha has written to Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha, urging swift intervention in resolving embankment construction issues affecting the flood-prone sub-divisions of Kailashahar and Belonia, both located along the India-Bangladesh border.
In his letter, Saha highlighted two critical concerns: the halted reconstruction of an elevated embankment in Kailashahar due to objections from the Border Security Force (BSF), and the near-completion of a high-rise embankment by Bangladesh across the border from Belonia, which has sparked anxiety among Indian villagers in South Tripura.
Saha noted that the central and state governments only took notice of the situation after Congress MLA Birajit Sinha raised the issue during the Assembly’s Budget session.
“In Belonia, a state official was sent only after villagers expressed alarm over the reconstruction by Bangladesh. Recently, even a brief spell of rain inundated low-lying areas there,” Saha wrote.
Accusing both the central and state administrations of neglecting border residents, he added, “It is evident that issues concerning people living along the border are not a priority for the government.”
Saha further questioned whether the Union Home Minister had been informed of these cross-border developments and called for urgent action to address the embankment-related challenges ahead of the upcoming monsoon season.
“I request that the problems in Kailashahar and Belonia be resolved before the rains begin,” the TPCC president urged in his letter.
