Agartala: Senior Tipra Motha Party (TMP) leader Rajeshwar Debbarma has appealed to Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha to ensure proper maintenance of the royal cremation ground located on the banks of the River Howrah in central Agartala.

The site holds immense historical significance as the sacred cremation ground of the Manikya dynasty, which ruled the princely state of Tripura from the 15th to the 20th century, making Agartala its capital.

In a letter to the Chief Minister on Friday, Debbarma, a former MLA, said, “The royal cremation ground, a historic and heritage site in Agartala, is currently in a distressing condition. On November 27, on the occasion of the death anniversary of the late Maharaja Kirit Bikram Kishore Manikya DebBarman, I visited the site to pay my homage and tributes, and was shocked to find the premises in a deplorable state.”

He noted that the area was littered with garbage and the overall upkeep was far from satisfactory. Highlighting its cultural and historical importance, Debbarma stressed that the cremation ground, which has witnessed the final rites of numerous members of the royal family, deserves recognition as a protected heritage site.

“I urge you to ensure proper maintenance of the cremation ground so that the legacy of this historic place can be preserved and continue to inspire and educate future generations,” he added.
