AGARTALA: Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, the Chief of the Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA), began his fast-unto-death on Wednesday.
Through the hunger strike, the Tipra chief aims to urge the Centre for a “permanent Constitutional solution” for Tripura’s indigenous population.
Significant security arrangements have been put in place to prevent any untoward incidents.
Debbarma is receiving overwhelming support from the indigenous populace of the state, with hundreds anticipated to join Bubagra’s fast-unto-death in a powerful display of solidarity and backing.
Earlier, Debbarma had announced that his hunger strike would not be under the banner of TIPRA Motha but open for all tribals irrespective of their political affiliation and other differences.
Meanwhile, the party has called upon all political and non-political parties, civil societies, and individuals to support Debbarma’s hunger strike.
In an open letter to the citizens of Tripura on February 27, party president BK Hrangkhawl urged the people of the state to come out in large numbers in solidarity with the indigenous cause.
“Your support, solidarity, and collective voice are indispensable in our fight for justice and equality,” read the letter.
In a passionate audio message on February 24, Pradyot had expressed deep disappointment with what he perceives as the central government’s neglect of the issues faced by Tripura’s indigenous communities.
“I have eagerly championed the cause of my people, and now, we find ourselves at the pinnacle of this endeavour. I have made numerous sacrifices for my fellow Tiprasa,” Pradyot expressed in his message.
He also lamented the insufficient attention paid to the indigenous people of Tripura by officials and leaders in Delhi, accusing them of neglecting the state’s importance and delaying vital discussions on seeking constitutional solutions for indigenous rights.
Notably, Debbarma’s hunger strike follows a day after the initial round of discussions between TIPRA Motha and the Congress, regarding the formation of a broader opposition alliance to counter the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
