Agartala: Six Rohingya women were apprehended by police in Tripura’s Unakoti district on Saturday morning, as they were attempting to return to Bangladesh after spending an extended period in Bengaluru.
The women were arrested from Saprikandi village, located within the Kailashahar subdivision of the district.
The arrest was made following a tip-off based on intelligence inputs.
Police officers detained the women after they failed to provide valid travel documents to support their stay in India.
According to authorities, the women did not have the necessary paperwork required for their presence or travel within the country.
Sub-Inspector Taruni Jamatia, from the Irani Police Station, stated that during questioning, the women revealed they had arrived from Bengaluru on January 15 and were en route to Bangladesh.
One of the women had a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) identity card, which was recovered during the investigation.
The card indicated that the group was originally from a Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh, further confirming their affiliation.

In light of the situation, a case has been filed under the Passports Act and the BNS (Bangladesh Nationality Status) regulations.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the matter, and the arrested individuals are expected to face legal proceedings.
The arrest of these women adds to the growing concerns about the movement of Rohingya refugees in India, with reports indicating that many are attempting to cross the border into Bangladesh, often without proper documentation, amidst the ongoing humanitarian crisis faced by the Rohingya community.
