AGARTALA: Sheikh Hasina, the embattled prime minister of Bangladesh, has reportedly fled the country amid the deadly protests over a special job quota and landed in Tripura’s capital Agartala on Monday.
She landed in Agartala and is likely to fly to London, as reported by Hindustan Times.
As per reports, Sheikh Hasina and her younger sister Sheikh Rehana departed from Bangabhaban on a helicopter around 2:30 pm on Monday.
Hasina vacated Dhaka amid violent protests that continued to escalate on Monday demanding her resignation.
According to media reports, a crowd of protestors also stormed into Ganobhaban, the official residence of the Bangladesh Prime Minister.
The clashes broke out on Sunday morning when protesters attending the non-cooperation programme under the banner of the Students Against Discrimination with the one-point demand of Hasina’s resignation over a job quota system faced opposition from the supporters of the ruling Awami League, Chhatra League, and Jubo League activists.
The demonstrations spiralled into a campaign seeking Hasina’s ouster as protesters demanded justice for people killed last month.
At least 101 people, including 14 policemen, were killed in clashes on Sunday.
Bangladesh’s Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman confirmed that she left the country after resigning from her post. Zaman also announced that an interim government, with the participation of all parties, will be formed soon.
