Security breach at Tripura Sundari Temple during PM’s visit raises concerns

Agartala: A major security lapse occurred at the Tripura Sundari Temple complex (Matabari) on the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited to inaugurate the redeveloped premises.

The breach reportedly involved sitting MLA Abhishek Debroy, sparking serious questions about protocol adherence and discipline.

Officials explained that security arrangements for a Prime Ministerial visit follow strict SPG Blue Book guidelines, including multiple security layers, perimeter checks, and close-proximity protection.

Any deviation from these protocols is treated with utmost seriousness.

Eyewitnesses said security personnel struggled to contain the MLA despite repeated warnings.

Standard crowd-control measures, such as lathi charges or water cannons, could not be employed due to the presence of the Prime Minister, as any escalation could have disrupted the event or caused larger security risks.

Observers noted that even a symbolic protest, such as a black flag display, could have led to drastic SPG actions, including a potential early termination of the inauguration, causing embarrassment for the state administration and attracting national scrutiny.

While authorities have not yet disclosed whether legal or police action will be taken against the MLA or others involved, accountability questions are emerging.

Ground-level officials hope they will not be penalised for circumstances largely beyond their control.

Political analysts have criticised Debroy’s conduct, arguing that as a young elected representative, he should have upheld responsibility.

His actions, they say, compromised the security apparatus and threatened the smooth execution of a landmark state event.

Given the seriousness of the incident, it is likely to attract attention at the national level, particularly because the SPG maintains a strict, zero-tolerance approach to threats during Prime Ministerial visits.
