New Delhi: Union Minister for Development of the North Eastern Region, Jyotiraditya Scindia, on Wednesday reviewed the Matabari Tourism Circuit project in Tripura, urging officials to adopt global benchmarks to transform the state into a premier cultural and spiritual tourism destination.
Chairing the high-level review meeting, Scindia called for drawing lessons from successful tourism models in Lakshadweep, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Gujarat’s Kevadia, to develop a world-class experience for visitors to Tripura.
He reiterated the Centre’s commitment to realising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of positioning every Indian state as a global tourism hub.
“Tripura has immense potential to become a leading centre for cultural, spiritual, and eco-tourism,” Scindia said, adding that the state’s rich heritage and natural beauty must be presented to the world in a sustainable and inclusive manner.

Detailed presentations were made on projects designed to enhance connectivity and tourism infrastructure, including improving international flight links from Agartala airport and upgrading attractions such as Neer Mahal, Tepania, Jampui Pura, and Udaipur.
Officials also discussed plans to develop the Dumbur islands through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to attract investment and ensure long-term sustainability.
Scindia further emphasised the need for capacity building in seven key areas — from local tourist guide training to heritage site management — to create jobs and strengthen the state’s tourism ecosystem.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha was present at the meeting, which underscored both the state and Centre’s joint commitment to making Tripura a standout destination on India’s tourism map.
