Agartala: Tripura is set to host a state-of-the-art cultural hub, funded by financial assistance from the Union Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Chief Minister Manik Saha announced on Saturday.

Speaking at the state-level Buisu festival in Karbook, Gomati district, Saha revealed that an initial allocation of Rs. 32.5 crore has been earmarked for the project.

The cultural hub aims to preserve and promote the rich traditions and heritage of Tripura’s diverse communities.

The facility will include a museum and other infrastructure to protect the cultural legacy of the state.

Highlighting the state’s emphasis on cultural growth, Saha noted the presence of prestigious institutions like the National School of Drama, Lalit Kala Akademi, Sangeet Natak Akademi, and Sahitya Akademi in Tripura.

These institutions, he said, are playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of children and youth.

“This year’s budget has allocated significant funds for the preservation and promotion of the culture and traditions of indigenous people,” the chief minister added.

Saha, who also oversees the Information and Cultural Affairs Department, reiterated his government’s commitment to uplifting the socio-economic conditions of tribal communities.

He assured the gathering that every necessary step would be taken to ensure their holistic development, emphasizing the preservation of their customs, culture, and traditions.

Speaking at the Buisu festival, a New Year celebration of the tribal Tripuri community, Saha expressed his admiration for the vibrant event and its role in fostering unity among Tripura’s 19 tribal groups.

He noted the significance of other traditional festivals, including Garia, Biju, Hajagiri, and Wangala, in promoting harmony among diverse communities.

Saha announced plans to establish a college focused on the Karbook language in the Gomati district, with funding included in this year’s budget.

The proposed college is expected to offer enhanced opportunities for higher education to tribal students.

Reflecting on the progress made under the BJP-led government, the chief minister attributed advancements in tribal development to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

“Since 2014, the pace of development for tribal communities has accelerated,” Saha said.

He also highlighted the recognition of seven tribal personalities from Tripura with the Padma Shri awards, an unprecedented achievement in the state’s history.
