Agartala: A political row has erupted in Tripura after Tipra Motha chairman Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma alleged that Gomati District Magistrate (DM) Tarit Kanti Chakma refused to meet him at his official residence in Udaipur.
Debbarma, accompanied by Pura Chandra Jamatia, Chief Executive Member of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), visited the DM’s residence on Sunday to discuss pressing district issues.
However, according to Debbarma, the district official declined to meet them or engage in any discussion.
“I’ve been trying to reach the DM for over a month via calls and text messages to discuss several important matters concerning Gomati district, but there was no response. When I finally went to his official residence, he still refused to speak with me,” Debbarma told reporters.
Expressing his frustration, Debbarma said, “It seems the DM has started acting like a VIP. As a public servant, he should be accessible at all times. Even the Chief Minister, Manik Saha, had no issue meeting me at his official residence.”
The incident has drawn strong criticism from opposition parties and allies. CPI(M) MLA and Leader of the Opposition, Jitendra Chaudhury, condemned the DM’s actions, calling them “unacceptable” and an act of “dereliction of duty and arrogance.”
He voiced his disapproval in a social media post on Monday.

Adding to the chorus, Tipra Motha Party (TMP) legislator Ranjit Debbarma demanded the immediate removal of DM Chakma.
In an official statement, he appealed to the chief minister to intervene, citing the DM’s “unexpected behaviour” and failure to fulfil the responsibilities of his post.
The state government has yet to issue an official response to the allegations or confirm whether any action will be taken against the district magistrate.
