Agartala: ONGC Tripura Power Company Ltd (OTPC), a subsidiary of ONGC, is partnering with Assam Power Development Corporation Ltd to develop a 250 MW battery energy storage system in Assam, an official announced on Sunday.
The initiative aims to store electricity generated from solar power in a state-of-the-art battery energy system, allowing it to be distributed through substations during peak demand hours or at night—when solar generation is unavailable.
“We’ve formed a joint venture with Assam Power Development Corporation to establish this 250 MW battery storage facility. The technology enables us to store solar energy during the day and supply it when it’s most needed,” the official said.
Given that this is a relatively new technology for many energy sector stakeholders, the project will be rolled out in phases to ensure smooth implementation and operational efficiency.
“The battery energy system functions much like a warehouse—capturing and storing surplus solar power for later use, especially during high-demand periods,” the official explained.
Once operational, the project will mark the first large-scale battery energy storage facility in the northeastern region.

It is expected to significantly enhance the region’s renewable energy infrastructure, enabling better management of solar power and paving the way for more sustainable energy practices.
Described as a potential game changer for clean energy in Northeast India, the facility aims to improve grid stability, reduce dependence on fossil fuels during peak hours, and set a precedent for future green energy initiatives in the region.
