Agartala: ONGC Tripura Asset has set a target to increase its natural gas production to 4 MMSCMD within the next year, a senior official confirmed on Friday.
Currently, the company produces 3.5 MMSCMD of gas, which is supplied to key gas-based power plants, including the OTPC in the Gomati area of Tripura.
ONGC Chief General Manager Roopesh Kumar Sharan outlined the company’s plan to boost output, stating, “We currently generate 3.5 MMSCMD annually to support the state’s power plants. Our target is to increase production to 4 MMSCMD in the coming year.”
Sharan also highlighted the company’s ongoing efforts to discover additional reserves. In addition to operating 95 gas-producing wells, ONGC Tripura Asset explores 17 to 18 new wells annually.
Exploration success rates in the northeastern region, he noted, are around 50 percent, in line with the national average.
Seven drilling rigs are currently deployed in the region to uncover new gas sources.

Addressing concerns about the reduced supply to the OTPC-run Palatana power plant, which had lowered its power generation from 726 MW to 400 MW due to supply issues, Sharan reassured that the gas supply had been restored.
He added that the plant exports about 100 MW of power to Bangladesh.
Sharan also shared updates on the Indra Dhanush Gas Grid (IGGL) project, stating that Tripura is expected to be connected by September next year.
“Once Tripura is linked to the IGGL, the state will have no issues meeting gas requirements for both power generation and industrial use,” he concluded.
