Agartala: The North Tripura district administration on Tuesday announced the launch of a major water conservation campaign, ‘Uttar Jal Sanchay Yatra’, aiming to construct 50,000 soak pits in just two days this November.
A soak pit is a porous underground chamber that allows water to gradually seep into the surrounding soil.
The mission is scheduled to launch on November 3 and 4, an official said.
“The district administration is all set to launch this historic mission—50,000 soak pits in just two days! Together, we will make water conservation a people’s movement,” District Magistrate Chandni Chandran said.
She emphasized that while soak pits may seem simple, their impact is significant—they facilitate rainwater infiltration, reduce flood risks, and improve soil health and agricultural productivity.
A demonstration of soak pit construction was conducted at the DM’s residence on Sunday in the presence of senior officials, including Additional District Magistrate L. Darlong.
The demonstration video has been shared on social media to encourage citizens across the district to participate.
Chandran appealed to the public to join the campaign: “We need your support! Take part in this mission at your home, village, or institution. Together, let’s make the Uttar Jal Sanchay Yatra a historic success.”
The initiative aims to turn water conservation into a mass movement and aligns with the national call to “catch the rain where it falls.”
The district administration has partnered with several government departments and organizations, including the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM-G), MyGov Tripura, RD Department, and TRLM, to ensure effective implementation.

Local panchayats, schools, Self Help Groups (SHGs), and community clubs will also be actively involved to make the program a district-wide success. “Special awareness campaigns will be conducted in every village, municipal ward, and gram panchayat,” Chandran added.
