Agartala: More than 400 personnel of the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) have been dispatched to Bihar to assist in maintaining law and order during the upcoming Assembly elections, following a directive from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

A senior official from the Tripura Home Department said the contingent, led by Commandant Jyotishman Daschoudhuri and accompanied by five Assistant Commandants, departed by a special train on Friday night.

They are expected to reach Patna by Sunday night or Monday morning.

The official said the Election Commission, in consultation with nodal security officials, will determine the exact deployment locations for the TSR personnel across Bihar.

The force will be engaged in ensuring security during both phases of polling — on November 6 and November 11 — which together cover all 243 Assembly constituencies.

Tripura’s elite paramilitary force has long been recognised for its role in securing elections and major events across India.

The TSR currently operates 14 battalions, most of which are India Reserve units capable of deployment in any state under the MHA’s direction.

Over the years, TSR battalions have served in various capacities across the country — two are currently stationed with the Delhi Police and South Eastern Coalfields Ltd in Chhattisgarh, while another provides security to Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) installations in Tripura.

The force has also played a key role in national duties, including election deployments in Maharashtra, Odisha, Bihar, and Himachal Pradesh during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and providing security during the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.

Trained extensively in counter-insurgency operations, the TSR has been instrumental in restoring peace in Tripura, which had long battled insurgency.

Formed under the Tripura State Rifles Act, 1983, the force’s disciplined operations and human rights record have earned it wide appreciation and national recognition.
