Agartala: Tripura Police on Thursday arrested three people, including two women, from Assam in connection with the public assault of a 23-year-old delivery boy who later died by suicide, an incident that has sparked widespread outrage across the state.
Police said the accused were apprehended from Sribhumi district, formerly Karimganj, in southern Assam with the assistance of the Assam Police.
The three have been identified as Sushmita Bhattacharjee, Sangita Bhattacharjee and Sourav Bhattacharjee, with Sangita Bhattacharjee being a schoolteacher by profession.
They are expected to be produced before a court in Dharmanagar. Efforts are underway to trace two other accused who remain absconding.
According to the police, the victim, Prasenjit Sarkar, a resident of Dharmanagar in North Tripura district, was working as a delivery boy with a private courier company.
On December 14, Sarkar was allegedly assaulted at his workplace following a dispute over the delivery of a parcel.
His family has alleged that three women and two men physically attacked him in public view.
The assailants allegedly recorded the assault on video and later circulated the footage on social media, subjecting Sarkar to severe public humiliation.
Family members and local residents said the incident caused immense mental trauma and deeply affected his self-respect.
Unable to cope with the humiliation, Sarkar, who was the sole earning member of his family, allegedly died by suicide later the same day, leaving behind his mother and family in distress.

An FIR lodged by the victim’s family has named the two absconding accused as Meghadeep Bhattacharjee and Piu Dhar.
Police said a thorough investigation is underway and further arrests are likely.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, who also holds the home portfolio, had earlier assured swift action in the case.
In a social media post, he said the government would ensure a thorough investigation and deliver justice without delay.
The incident has triggered protests across Tripura, with political parties and civil society organisations demanding strict punishment for those involved and justice for the victim.
