Agartala: The Congress party organised a long march on Saturday to the international border in Tripura’s Unakoti district, calling for the Centre’s intervention to halt the ongoing construction of an embankment by Bangladesh along the “zero line” at the border.
The construction of the embankment by Bangladesh, near Tripura’s Rangauti area, has raised concerns as parts of the structure reportedly extend to the zero line, causing resentment among the local population in Kailashahar, a border subdivision of Tripura.
Congress MLA Birajit Sinha urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to take immediate action against the construction by Bangladesh authorities.
He described the issue as an “international matter” and accused Bangladesh of violating the Indira-Mujib pact by building the embankment in this sensitive area.
“This is an act of aggression by Bangladesh against India, Tripura, and the people of Kailashahar,” Sinha asserted.
“The construction of the embankment along the zero line is a direct challenge to our sovereignty.”
The long march, attended by thousands of Congress supporters and local residents, demanded either the construction of a new embankment or the repair of the 40-year-old embankment in Kailashahar to prevent flooding.
The locals fear that the lack of proper flood control measures will lead to unprecedented flooding during the upcoming monsoon season.

Sinha also raised concerns about the recent attack on Border Security Force (BSF) personnel by Bangladeshi nationals in the Magroli border village.
“Bangladeshi nationals attacked BSF jawans and attempted to snatch their weapons,” he noted.
“This escalating aggression calls for stronger security measures along the border.”
Sinha urged the central government to immediately halt the construction of the embankment and take decisive steps to ensure the safety and security of the region.
