Agartala: The Ministry of Tribal Welfare has approved six more Ekalavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) for Tripura.
The announcement was made by State Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma on Tuesday.
Debbarma said the decision was finalized during a meeting with Vibhu Nair, Secretary of the Ministry of Tribal Welfare, in New Delhi on Monday.
He said the initiative would further strengthen the education infrastructure in both rural and hilly areas.
“These schools will not only provide access to quality education but also help build leadership, creativity, and self-confidence among children from tribal-dominated areas,” the Minister said.
“Education is not just a curriculum, it is the backbone of a nation. Through this decision, we want to further strengthen that backbone,” he stated.
The six new EMRS will be equipped with modern infrastructure, residential facilities, and a holistic environment for the all-round development and academic excellence of tribal students.
The initiative is expected to make a transformative impact on students from tribal and backward communities across Tripura.
The minister stated that the implementation work would begin soon through a joint collaboration between the Centre and the state government.
Tripura already has 21 EMRS schools set up by the Central Government, many of which are now fully functional. These schools have made it possible for students in remote areas to access better educational opportunities.

“Our aim is to ensure that every child, no matter where they come from, gets the chance to build a bright future. These new schools are a step forward in that mission,” Debbarma added.
He stated that the EMRS initiative, designed for tribal and underdeveloped regions, seeks to revolutionize the state’s educational landscape.
