Guwahati: In a major fillip to rail connectivity in the Northeast, the central government has sanctioned a new train service connecting Agartala with Guwahati.
The decision comes following sustained efforts by West Tripura MP and former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb.
Taking to social media, Deb wrote, “Another achievement. I express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for approving the launch of a new rail service on the Agartala-Guwahati route, respecting the demands of the people of Tripura and prioritising passenger comfort.”
Sources indicate that the approval was granted following Deb’s consultation with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on April 22 in New Delhi.
The discussion centred on improving railway services in Tripura, with Deb emphasising the need for new express trains and modernisation of existing infrastructure.
A primary focus of the discussion was establishing direct rail connectivity between Agartala and Guwahati to enhance regional transport options.
The Railway Ministry promptly approved this proposal and communicated their decision to Deb via official correspondence.

Deb thanked the Railway Minister for the prompt response and for fulfilling the commitments made during their recent discussion.
The new train is expected to significantly enhance regional connectivity and facilitate passenger movement between Tripura and Assam.
