Action has been taken against four police officers and seven individuals have been arrested in connection with the breach of premises at the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala, police reported on Tuesday.
Three sub-inspectors were suspended, and a deputy superintendent of police was ‘closed’, asking him to report to the police headquarters, for alleged negligence, West Tripura SP Kiran Kumar K confirmed the development to a news wire.
“A suo motu case has been registered at the New Capital Complex (NCC) police station, and seven people have been arrested for their alleged involvement,” Kumar said. “An investigation is underway, and appropriate legal actions will follow.”
Following the breach, security around the consulate has been heightened, with personnel from the CRPF and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) deployed, according to the SP.
The incident occurred on Monday when members of the Hindu Sangharsh Samity were protesting the arrest of Hindu leader Chinmoy Krishna Das and alleged atrocities against minorities in Bangladesh.
Chief Minister Manik Saha condemned the breach, stating, “During the protest, a group of youth attempted to force their way into the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission. I condemn the incident. Peaceful protests are acceptable, but such behaviour is not.”
Hotels and restaurants announce ban on serving Bangladeshis
In a related development, the All Tripura Hotel & Restaurant Owners’ Association (ATHROA) has decided that its members will no longer serve Bangladeshi guests in protest against the recent desecration of the Indian flag in Bangladesh.
Saikat Bandyopadhyay, general secretary of ATHROA, explained the decision, saying, “We are a secular country and respect all religions. However, the desecration of our national flag and the ongoing oppression of minorities by certain fundamentalist groups in Bangladesh have crossed a line.”
This decision follows ongoing tensions over the treatment of religious minorities in Bangladesh and previous incidents of disrespect towards India’s national symbols.
