Agartala: An ancient stone statue believed to depict Lord Brahma was uncovered in Tripura’s Unakoti district on Tuesday.
The discovery was made by laborers working on a village road construction project in the Bhuiyapara area, approximately 3 kms from the renowned Unakoti archaeological site.
Following the find, local villagers began offering prayers to the statue, according to officials.
Kailashashar Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Pradip Sarkar and Abhishek Kumar, the Assistant Conservator of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), visited the site to inspect the discovery and take possession of the statue.
“The statue appears to be an ancient idol of Lord Brahma. Local ASI officials reported the discovery to senior authorities,” the SDM stated to the media.

The statue is currently being housed at the office of the Unakoti District Magistrate, the SDM added.
The Bhuiyapara village falls under the jurisdiction of the Deoracherra Autonomous District Council (ADC), and is situated close to the Unakoti archaeological site, famous for its rock-cut figures and carvings.
Dating back to the 7th-9th centuries, these artistic representations feature Hindu deities and mythological characters.
