Agartala: The affordable housing project under the Light House Project (LHP) at Akhaura near Agartala is expected to be completed by May 2026, a senior official said on Wednesday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone for LHPs in six states in 2021. While the projects in the other five states have already been completed, work on the Akhaura site is still underway.
The scheme involves constructing houses for economically weaker sections using innovative, climate-resilient technologies suited to the region’s geo-climatic and hazard conditions.
“The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is the nodal agency for the Light House Project. It has engaged a construction firm to execute the work, but progress was delayed due to several factors,” said State Urban Development Secretary Abhishek Singh.
He explained that the project had faced a fund shortage because additional piling work, which was not included in the original DPR, had to be undertaken. There were also challenges related to labour and construction materials. Due to the financial shortfall, the construction agency had slowed down progress. He added that the issue had now been resolved after the Centre sanctioned an additional Rs 40 crore, following Chief Minister Manik Saha’s intervention.

Singh said senior officials of the construction firm had recently visited the state and assured that the project would be completed by May.
He added that out of the 500 beneficiaries, nearly 450 have already paid the full amount for their flats.
