New Delhi/Agartala: In a significant move to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in Tripura, the state government on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi.
The MoU, inked between AIIMS, Delhi, and Tripura’s Health and Family Welfare Department, was signed in the presence of Chief Minister Manik Saha at Tripura Bhawan, New Delhi.
The chief minister, who also holds the Health and Family Welfare portfolio, said the partnership aims to develop state and district-level hospitals and medical colleges into Centres of Excellence in medical education and super-speciality healthcare services, adhering to international standards.
“The state government envisions transforming Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital into a medical hub with state-of-the-art patient care facilities, modelled on AIIMS, Delhi,” Saha said.
He highlighted AIIMS, Delhi’s global recognition in medical education, research, and advanced patient care, describing the collaboration as a “major step towards enhancing healthcare quality and reach across Tripura.”
A four-member team from AIIMS, led by Director M. Srinivas, had visited AGMC, GBP Hospital, and other government hospitals in Tripura in June to study the existing health services at the request of the Chief Minister.
The team’s recommendations formed the basis of the MoU.

Saha also held a meeting with Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda on Tuesday, discussing various initiatives, including the establishment of a new medical college in Kulai, Dhalai district, under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, a Tertiary Ophthalmology Hospital at Agartala, and an Immunology Lab for organ transplant services at AGMC and GBP Hospital.
The chief minister requested additional funds for advanced medical instruments at the AGMC Super Speciality Block and for settling pending claims under Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY).
Tripura currently has three medical colleges: Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC), Tripura Medical College (TMC), and Tripura Santiniketan Medical College (TSMC), with TSMC being private and TMC managed by a state government-constituted society.
