Agartala: At least 12 people were injured on Friday as Tripura Congress’s state-level Bharat Jodo Yatra was attacked at two places in Tripura.
Hundreds of Congress workers were marching to Santir Bazar market in South Tripura district when some people started pelting stones at them.
It was around 3.30 pm when the Congress members came under the attack. Three policemen were also reportedly injured in the attack.
The Congress members alleged that supporters of the ruling BJP were behind the stone-pelting attack.
As the situation was going out of control, police had to resort to lathi-charge to disperse the attacking youths.
Later, agitated BJP supporters protested outside the police station over the lathi charge on its supporters.
Congress leader Asish Saha claimed more than one-dozen party workers were injured in the attack by BJP.
Similar attack on Congress workers was also reported from Amatali in West Tripura district on Friday.
Criticising the attacks, Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman sought police action as per the law. “Police are not doing anything to safeguard lives and properties of common people in Tripura,” he said.
